lyrics
When I was young, the earth it burned a gorgeous flame.
Gave me a choice, it gave me pain and simple joys.
I’m still the same. I am to blame.
I play this game that I won’t win.
The living dead they type it out and sing their songs.
They scream, they cry, they joke, they laugh and dream of flight.
I’m still the same. I am to blame.
I run this race that I won’t win.
Lay me down in the clovers on the hill.
Such a waste, you can see it in your face.
Low and behold, I am not your gun for hire.
I ain’t the same. I’m not to blame
and I will win, I will win.

Up there with Joe's best -- it feels like it pulls from every record he's done before while still being completely distinct from any Cymbals record in the way it combines the psychedelia and accessibility with some of the lushest, most ornately arranged music I've heard. Plus the guitars still rock, the solos fucking slap, and the ballads somehow slap just as hard. The narrative based lyrics also hit a sweet spot in Joe's lyricism -- direct but inventive, descriptive and endlessly compelling. Emmanuel Castillo
